THIRTEEN

esse’s funeral took place three days after her death. The church was crowded with people. At her funeral, Lilith observed her friends and family going through all kinds of emotions, but some just plain empty. Lilith was not quite sure how Jesse felt at the time of her death. Everyone has to approach death sooner or later, so what is the rush? Death was just a fact of life, and everyone knows that.

In her will, Jesse had donated her body to medical science for research, but now her generosity couldn’t be accomplished because all her body was burnt. To Lilith, it made no sense. She wondered why Jesse decided to donate her body for research, then burnt herself to death.

While people still settled in, at the corner, Jesse’s husband cried painfully. Her husband had her cremated and kept in a porcelain urn at the cemetery instead of burying her. Some couldn’t help but burst into tears. Lilith took a deep breath, and she thought about Wesley. She wished he was there with her, sitting next to her and giving her more energy to feel better. She wished he could read her mind.

Lilith looked around the church but not to look at the guests. No doubt, everyone would miss the dead, but some overdramatized the situation. The best way to make people less intense is to laugh it out, but who would want to start laughing? Right at the moment when Lilith thought about laughing at the funeral, she heard a soft laugh right next to her. She felt a cold hand barely touch hers. She smiled as she recognized him.

“Justin, do you know Jesse?”

“Not that well. I was just passing by, and I decided to come in.”

“You don’t know her that well, but you want to attend her funeral? How nice of you, Justin. How did you two meet?”

“I met her at the park, yelling and screaming at her husband. I decided to sit down next to them and listen to their conversation.”

“Why did you want to do that?”

“I was eating my ice cream and got nothing to do.”

“Okay. Did they let you listen to their conversation?”

“They didn’t even know that I was sitting next to them on the same bench.”

“Her husband kept calling ‘whore,’ ‘slut,’ and ‘cunt.’ Why did he call her that, Lilith?’

“Uh, those are obscene and repulsive language.”

“Then why did he use obscene language speaking to her?”

“Out of anger, I assume.”

“He said she spent so much money on her boobs…”

Lilith tried not to laugh, but Justin was hilarious. Looking away, she tried to calm herself down.

“Lilith, did I say something wrong?”

Still thinking about his simplemindedness, Lilith said in soft voice, “You were just telling me what you heard.”

“She cremated her own body so her husband didn’t have to spend money on cremating her?”

“Uh, she committed suicide.”

“Well-done?”

“What?”

“Did she burn herself to well-done?”

“I think so. Justin, you never stop surprising me with your language.”

“So she is now inside that urn? What are they going to do with her inside?”

“Her husband or her family members will keep the urn.
